The Bengal derives from Asian Leopard Cat ( ALC )
which is one of the most beautiful of the small cats it is Felis Bengalenis more commonly known as the Asian Leopard Cat, being bred to spotted domestic cats. The Egyptian Mau was initially used, as well as other domestic short hairs.
Viable offspring were produced, but because the parents were two different species, males in the first few generations of Leopard Cat hybrids were sterile.
After many years of out crossing, inbreeding and selective breeding a stunning new breed of domestic cat was created the Bengal cat, it was named after the scientific name for the Asian Leopard Cat Prionailurus Bengalensis.
The Bengal is an exciting breed of Domestic cat that is not only dramatically beautiful and quite unique from other breeds of cats but it is free spirited and very talkative.
The first thing that stands out is the strikingly beautiful leopard-like pattern of their thick short pelt.
They come in a range of colours including Snows,Lynx, Silvers, Browns, Blue, and in Spotted or Marble patterns.
Bengal’s are alert, alive, incredibly quick and extremely intelligent so are easy to train.
Bengal’s like getting up to mischief, they are agile and very athletic getting into and on top of things with ease.
So if you are looking for a quiet lap cat a Bengal may not be for you, but if you are looking for an entertaining intelligent cat that will love to be part of the family you may have found the breed for you.
Most Bengal’s enjoy water and will happily pay in a few inches of water, help with the washing up or pop into the shower with you.
